Does Nova asking Maurice "Me...ape?" and her not upset by her father's death support the Colonel's befief of humans becoming primitive?

I do think Colonel's belief of humans becoming primitive can be questioned but Nova asking Maurice if she is ape is weird to me. Does she no longer understand she is a human? Her not being saddened with her father's death is also bizarre.
