Scott Z. Burns is a screenwriter, producer and director from Golden Valley, Minnesota. He graduated in 1985 with a degree in English from the University of Minnesota and has written screenplays for The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Informant! (2009) and Contagion (2011) - all of which featured Matt Damon - and also produced the Academy Award-winning An Inconvenient Truth (2006). In May 2012 it was reported that Burns was to take over writing of the draft script for the Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes from original writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, working under director Rupert Wyatt. However, by October Matt Reeves had replaced Wyatt as director of the project, and the existing script by Silver and Jaffa was to be reworked instead by Mark Bomback.[1] Burns later explained, "Rupert Wyatt and I worked on a draft last summer that I think we were both really excited about and he went into Fox and they seemed to like it, they wanted a lot of changes and they sort of parted ways over those changes. Then management shifted at Fox, they brought in a new director, I think the new director wanted a new writer and I don't know how much of what we did and I wrote is ongoing. It's kind of heartbreaking because I really loved what we were trying to say with that movie so I hope some of it survives or that they come up with something a lot better"... "I was loving it, it was a really fun world to play in. It's really heartbreaking when these things sort of leave you and you're not even sure why".[2]
