Synopsis[]
The fugitives visit a human village subjugated by an elder gorilla, Prefect Sover. Posing as their owner, Galen rents them out to work. The ground opens one day as a rocket blasts forth from below. The human slaves prostrate themselves before it, but the astronauts realize the rocket might be their ticket home. That night, Galen visits them, bringing news from a human named Anitra: The town is built over a hidden underground laboratory, which they call 'Down Below'. Anitra and others perform heavy labor there. He takes them to see Anitra, who refuses to take them to Down Below, fearing execution. An alarm sounds, and her mate Bilé is arrested for riding a horse and is sent to work with the mineral extractors. As apes drag him away, Virdon consoles Anitra. She takes them to the lab, telling a guard named Keno that Sover sent for them. Suspicious, Keno contacts Sover. The astronauts find an underground science lab with anti-atomic protection, and continue on to a door. More than a dozen rockets stand within. Sover enters with Anitra, saying he knows who they are and needs them to make the rockets fly. In return, he'll free Bilé and give them a rocket to return home. However, he betrays them, putting Bilé in a test rocket that explodes on launch, killing him. Outraged, they refuse to help, but he kills Anitra. A few days later, Galen helps them escape. Furious over Anitra's murder, Burke grabs a pole and beats the gorilla to death. Setting the rockets to explode, they run for cover as the detonations cause an earthquake that swallows the entire building.
