Councilor Quintessa was an orangutan leader of Ape City alongside Councilor Tenebris and Doctor Zaius twenty years before Taylor's arrival. Quintessa refused to believe that Tenebris and his protégé Ursus were behind the ruthless attempts to stifle any challenge to traditional values, which included the murder of Doctor Cato, and dismissed Prisca's warnings of danger. Conveniently for Tenebris, Quintessa was killed in a carriage accident which Prisca believed was rigged. Cato's study subject, the human Tern, ultimately killed Tenebris after Aleron found himself unable to, but both Tern and Aleron were then swept downriver and assumed dead.
