Sabian was an orangutan who lived in the East coast Ape City in the latter half of the 40th century. He was a high-ranking religious leader among the ape community, and was called upon to bless the gorilla army as it set off to conquer the Forbidden Zone.
He was the predecessor of Dr. Zaius as the Chief Defender of the Faith before retiring. He had very conservative beliefs, Sabian came out of retirement to become the High Patriarch (‘Pontifex Rex’) of Ape City, and formed a powerful alliance with Ursus that aimed to exterminate the human race.
A short time later Sabian was confronted by Liet and the Anti-Vivisection Society, however they were killed by the Alpha-Omega Bomb before any action by either him or Liet and the Anti-Vivisection Society could take place.
- It originally was not clear whether Sabian was intended to be the same Minister that had been in Planet of the Apes.
- The 2018 novel Death of the Planet of the Apes identifies this character as Sabian, Dr Zaius' predecessor as Chief Defender of the Faith and now High Patriarch of Ape City. The novel depicts his death during the destruction of Earth in January 3979.
