Michael Giacchino is an Oscar-winning film composer who replaced Patrick Doyle in scoring the soundtrack of Matt Reeves' 2014 film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Giacchino is a frequent collaborator of Matt Reeves' good friend J.J. Abrams, having worked with him on the long running television series Lost and his two Star Trek movies, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013).
While working on Let Me In (2010), Matt Reeves visited Michael Giacchino's office to discuss the film and noticed Giacchino's collection of MEGO Planet of the Apes figures. They began talking about how Planet of the Apes was "Their Star Wars before Star Wars" when they were kids. Later, when Reeves began production on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he reached out to Giacchino to score the film.[1]
One of Michael Giacchino's main influences was Jerry Goldsmith and his score for the original Planet of the Apes. When composing the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes soundtrack, Giacchino aimed to stay true to Goldsmith's experimental style while ensuring that emotion remained at the heart of the music.[2]
