Matthew 'Matt' Reeves is a film writer, director and producer born in Rockville Centre, New York, and raised in Los Angeles, California. He began making movies at eight years old, directing friends with a wind-up camera. Reeves met and became friends with future director J.J. Abrams when both were 13 years old, both having their early short films screened at an 8mm film fest in Los Angeles and aired on a Public-access cable TV channel. Reeves attended the University of Southern California, where he co-wrote a script that eventually became Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995). After graduating, he co-wrote The Pallbearer (1996), which also became his professional directorial debut. Reeves and Abrams co-created the TV series Felicity (1998–2002) and Reeves directed several episodes. Reeves has also directed episodes of other TV series, including Homicide: Life on the Streets and Relativity, as well as the 2008 monster movie, Cloverfield, which Abrams produced. Reeves wrote and directed Let Me In (2010, a remake of the Swedish film Let the Right One In), and was announced to direct a movie based on Rod Serling's classic TV series The Twilight Zone but dropped out in order to direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ironically another project with heavy influence from Serling. He also recently directed The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson.

In October 2012 Matt Reeves replaced Rupert Wyatt as director of the Apes movie sequel project Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Later that month, Mark Bomback was hired to rework the draft script of Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, having already done some uncredited work on Silver and Jaffa’s script for Rise of the Planet of the Apes.[1][2]

  • Reeves is good friends with Keri Russell who played the female human lead in Dawn. He was the one who asked Russell to sign onto the film. Russell played Felicity Porter in Reeves' television series Felicity (1998-2002) which he created with J.J. Abrams.
  • Matt is a massive fan of the Planet of the Apes films as he stated at Comic Con '13 that he always wanted to be a gorilla with the John Chambers make up.
