Los Angeles was the most populous city in the U.S. state of California and the second-most populous in the United States. Originally inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash tribes, the area was claimed by the Spanish Empire in 1542 until it became part of independent Mexico in 1821. By 1848, California was given to the United States following the Mexican–American War and Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality in 1850. Among other strengths, Los Angeles was a global entertainment hub, with the district of Hollywood leading the world in the creation of motion pictures, television productions, and music.

Background[]
In 2016, Global Airlines pilot Douglas Hunsiker spread the Simian Flu worldwide after contracting it from Robert Franklin. As a result, Los Angeles was greatly impacted by the Simian Flu Pandemic, enduring high death tolls from the illness and suffering from massive civil unrest and anarchy as the city's population was decimated. The lack of maintenance and natural deterioration caused the city's skyscrapers to become covered in vegetation. In the decades following the pandemic, Los Angeles was left in ruins and eventually reclaimed by nature.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes[]
Over the next generations after the Simian Flu, Evolved Apes established new clans, with some settling in what was once the Greater Los Angeles area. Notably, the Order of Caesar made its home near the ruins of LAX, while the Eagle Clan lived not far by horse ride from the ruins of the Griffith Observatory.
Notes[]
- A 1975 timeline published in Marvel Comics' Planet of the Apes Magazine #11 identified San Francisco as the 'Modern City'/'Forbidden City' where the events of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes take place, but other sources identify it as Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City, or an entirely newly-built city.
