Los Angeles is the most populous city in the U.S. state of California and the second-most populous in the United States, after New York City. Originally inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash tribes, the area was claimed for the Spanish Empire in 1542. In 1781 a group of forty-four settlers, mostly with a mixture of American, African and European ancestry, founded a town called "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula". By the time it became a part of newly-independent Mexico in 1821 the population had increased to about 650 residents. In 1848 California was surrendered to the United States following the Mexican–American War, and Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality in 1850. Among other strengths, Los Angeles is a global entertainment hub, with the district of Hollywood leading the world in the creation of motion pictures, television productions and music since the 1910s.
