Kananaios was a preacher, devoted follower of the Lawgiver and his teachings. At some point, he took in a young Ursus, becoming his adoptive father and only close family. As Kananaios raised the boy, he began to see his adoptive son as an instrument to fulfill the Lawgiver's wishes.

Planet of the Apes: Ursus[]

Death of the Planet of the Apes[]

The former Chief Defender of the Faith, Sabian, was a close friend and confidant of Kananaios. He often visited the preacher's home, where he also spent time with Kananaios's adoptive son, Ursus.

While on an incursion led by Ursus into one of the caves in the hills of the Forbidden Zone, Lieutenant Dangral discovered a set of tools and handed them to General Ursus, who quickly recognized that they were clearly not ape-made. The notion that a human had crafted them seemed ludicrous at first, but in that moment, Ursus recalled how Kanananois had once warned him that not all humans were mindlessā€”some could pose a subtle but growing danger to the apes. Back then, Ursus had dismissed such a notion, but these tools now painted a very different picture.

Trivia[]

  • While Kananaios first appeared in the BOOM! Studios comic continuity and is mentioned multiple times in the Death of the Planet of the Apes novel, it should be noted that the events of the comic series and the BOOM! Studios era as a whole do not align well with those presented in the novel and its predecessor. Additionally, the events at Terminus are neither mentioned nor implied in the novel's continuity. This suggests that while Kananaios exists in both continuities, the events he experienced may differ significantly between them.
  • Kananaios is the third albino gorilla introduced in the Planet of the Apes franchise as a whole, the first being General Nix from the BOOM! Studios continuity and the second being Winter, the treacherous gorilla featured in the War for the Planet of the Apes film.
