John Huston was an acclaimed American writer, director and occasional actor, born in Missouri, who won a best director Oscar for Treasure of the Sierra Madre in 1949. Huston played the role of The Lawgiver in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973).

  • Sam Jaffe was originally signed as the Lawgiver, but turned down the role when he discovered he would have to shave off his eight-year-old beard in order to accommodate the ape facial appliances. He was replaced with the similarly-bearded, but more willing, John Huston.[1]
