General Winthrop's Aide arrived with the General, and another aide, to witness the opening of the recovered spacecraft in 1973. He later accompanied the General to the military base the Apes had been taken to, and brought a bag of oranges, having been told that chimps are vegetarians. He handed one orange to Cornelius, who accepted. Under the impression the apes were mute, the aide then handed two more oranges through the jail cell. Cornelius nodded to him, and he nodded back, under the apparent guise that was sign language for thanks. The aide also recommended to his superior officer about transporting the chimpanzees to the Los Angeles Zoo and had already contacted them if there was space available, which the general accepted that course of action.
