DC Comics, Inc. (doing business as DC, formerly known as National Comics Publications and Detective Comics, Inc.) is an American comic book publisher and the flagship unit of DC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery.

DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies in the world. Founded in Autumn 1934 as National Comics Publications by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, with their first comic under the DC banner being published in 1937. It would be acquired by Kinney National Company in 1967, followed by Kinney National Company itself being acquired by Warner Bros. two years later. DC's chief competitor is Marvel Comics, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company.

DC is best known for titles such as Batman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Swamp Thing, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, John Constantine, Hellblazer, Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Jonah Hex, Ragman, Azrael, The Spectre, The Demon, The Question, Deadman, Deathstroke, Lobo, The Sandman, Birds of Prey, Preacher, Suicide Squad, The Outsiders, Peacemaker, Joker, Harley Quinn, Creature Commandos, Doomsday Clock, Rorschach, Catwoman, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Zatanna, Reign in Hell, Day of Vengeance, Injustice, Shadowpact, WildC.A.T.s, The Grifter, Gen 13, Stormwatch, Transmetropolitan and iZombie. DC also published the popular humor magazine, MAD.

DC Comics along with BOOM! Studios made a six issue crossover of Planet of the Apes with DC superhero, Green Lantern in 2017.

Trivia[]

  • Carmine Infantino who was editor of DC Comics until being promoted to publisher in 1971 tried to get the comic licensing rights to Planet of the Apes, but the licensing rights go to DC's chief rival, Marvel instead. Infantino asked comic book artist, Jack Kirby to created a comic book series with a similar concept to Planet of the Apes for DC Comics. Kirby did created a story, The Last Enemy! with a similar plotline to Planet of the Apes and also an used comic strip he created in 1956, Kamandi of the Caves and combined them to created Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth that takes place on Earth in a post-apocalyptic future with highly evolved animals (not just apes) and de-evolved humans with the expectation of the comic series' main protagonist, Kamandi.
