Corinna Bechko earned a Zoology degree and spent many years working with wildlife and in zoos, including a research position at Los Angeles Zoo collecting behavioral data on chimpanzees and orangutans. Corinna believes that 'Bruno' the male orangutan at LA Zoo was used as a model for Maurice in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and in her opinion Karin Konoval's performance was "even more amazing" than that of Andy Serkis as Caesar.[1] Bechko maintained a side interest in writing, which eventually became a full-time career. Her credits include Marvel Comics' Fear Itself and, with artist partner Gabriel Hardman, Image Comics' Heathentown and 2013's Star Wars: Legacy sequel.

Following the success of BOOM! Studios' Planet of the Apes comic series, Bechko and Hardman approached BOOM! and pitched their idea for a spin-off Planet of the Apes title - a subject which Bechko naturally had a deep interest in. Their four-issue mini-series entitled Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes was released in November 2011 and, having been very well-received, was followed by Exile on the Planet of the Apes in March 2012 and then Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm.[2]
