Betelguese is a star in our galaxy. It is a red super giant 520 light years away with a diameter of 700 million miles. It is 7500 times brighter than the Sun and 20 times its size. Its surface temperature is 6000 degrees F. It's name comes from a mistranslation of the Arabic 'Ibt al-Jauzā', meaning "the hand of Orion".
Planet of the Apes
In Pierre Boulle's original novel La Planète des Singes, Ulysse Mérou lands on the planet Soror, which orbits Betelguese. On Soror, where a majority of the novel takes place, the conditions allow for life just like on Earth.
- The star inspired the name of Tim Burton's 1988 film Beetlejuice (featuring Glenn Shadix and Danny Elfman).
