Notes[]

  • Though it should have been destroyed, a print of the Apes screen test showing Edward G. Robinson as Dr. Zaius was given to Robinson by Arthur P. Jacobs. This 'lost' film reel was later purchased by Kevin Burns, who was inspired to build it into this documentary film.[1]
  • Behind the Planet of the Apes originally aired on the American Movie Classics (AMC) channel in September of 1998.
  • Behind the Planet of the Apes was originally issued as a bonus disk on the Planet of the Apes: The Evolution DVD Collection. The documentary was later re-issued in 2001 as a separate DVD with additional footage.
  • The framing scenes featuring host Roddy McDowall were filmed at Malibu Creek State Park - 1925 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas, California, USA.
  • When condensed for broadcast on Bio (A&E's Biography Channel), the word "God" in Charlton Heston's final line from the original Planet of the Apes is censored, and the nudity during the courtroom scene is blurred out.
