- February 27: The death of writer Michael Avallone, author of the novelization of Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
- March: William Broyles Jr. (China Beach, Apollo 13) agrees to write a Planet of the Apes script.
- 20th Century Fox project a release date of July 2001 and Stan Winston Studios continue to develop animatronic makeup masks.
- June 18: Actor Paul Bradley passes away. Bradley is credited with appearing in Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
- October 26: Actor Steve Roberts passes away. Roberts is credited with playing the role of General Brody in the 1971 film Escape from the Planet of the Apes, though the character does not appear in the movie.
- 31 December: Return to the Planet of the Apes composer Dean Elliott passes away.
