Production Timeline[]
- January: Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) is selected to direct the new Apes picture, and pre-production is planned with a $100 million budget.
- Terry Hayes submits his screenplay, titled Return of the Apes. Dissatisfied with the script, 20th Century Fox fire him from the project.
- February: Phillip Noyce abandons the movie because of Fox's dismissal of Hayes. Producers Don Murphy and Jane Hamsher are bought off the project by Fox, while Oliver Stone switches his attention to other film projects.
- May 27th: Actor Severn Darden passes away in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Darden played the role of Governor Kolp in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.[1]
- Director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire) takes over the movie project, hiring scriptwriter Sam Hamm. Arnold Schwarzenegger remains attached to star.
- Stan Winston Studios make a demo reel of their Apes makeup, possibly including tests of apes skiing.
- Sam Hamm completes his Planet of the Apes screenplay, but it fails to meet 20th Century Fox's approval and director Chris Columbus drops out in late 1995.
