Production Timeline[]
- APJAC Productions brings the budget estimate down to $5.8 million and, at the suggestion of Charlton Heston, Franklin J. Schaffner is recruited as potential director.
- March 8th: A ten-minute Planet of the Apes makeup test - starring Charlton Heston as John Thomas, Edward G. Robinson as Dr. Zaius, James Brolin as Cornelius and Linda Harrison as Zira - is filmed at the request of Richard D. Zanuck, head of production at 20th Century Fox, to consider the practicalities of a movie adaptation. Ape appliances are by Fox's head of makeup, Ben Nye. Zanuck asks APJAC to bring the estimate down to $5 million while he negotiates with the Fox board, and suggests Linda Harrison should play the role of Nova in the movie.
- Arthur P. Jacobs tells actor Roddy McDowall about the Apes movie and suggests McDowall should have a role in the film.
- April 27: Writer, director and producer Matt Reeves is born in Rockville Centre, New York. Reeves directed the movies Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.
- May 26: Actress Helena Bonham Carter is born in England. Bonham Carter played the role of Ari in the 2001 're-imagined' Planet of the Apes film.
- September 26: Richard D. Zanuck, head of production at Twentieth Century Fox, gives the go-ahead to make a Planet of the Apes film with APJAC Productions, scheduled to begin filming in England in Spring 1967. Charles Eastman is hired to rewrite Rod Serling's screenplay for the movie.
- December: Eastman's script adaptation is abandoned and Michael Wilson replaces him. John Chambers is employed to design convincing ape makeup appliances and Jerry Goldsmith is asked to score the soundtrack.
